The Perfume Fragrance Families

Today, we will discussed about the fragrance families and their scent description. When we  smell some designer perfume of the best men’s cologne we quickly get a feel for what we like and dislike. But, do you know why you like certain fragrances over others. Typically it is because the perfume or cologne falls into a specific fragrance family that appeals to your senses.

Fragrance families are defined as a classification system used to assign fragrances into groups based on their predominant notes or scent characteristics.

Labeling which family a fragrance falls into is not rocket science but it does require some expertise. That is why it is left up to the perfume connoisseurs or experts in the field. They are able to separate notes, determine the dominant one, and classify the fragrance into one of the fragrance families.

Fresh Family
Greens- essence of fresh cut grass and violet leaves
Citrus- zest of a lemon, orange, grapefruit, or mandarin
Water- smell of a sea breeze or the wet air after a thunderstorm

Floral Family
Floral- most popular scent consisting of a single flower or bouquet
Soft Floral- powdery and delicate version like a rose muted by vanilla or iris
Floral Oriental- spicy and sweet scent of flowers combined with orange notes

Woody Family
Woody Oriental- exotic oriental scent plays second string to a mix of sandalwood notes
Mossy Woods- a damper greener scent like oak moss or citrus wood
Dry Woods- cedar, tobacco and burnt wood combined with a slight citrus, often called "Leather"

Oriental Family
Oriental- exotic and sensual blend of opulent flowers, sweet vanilla, and musk
Soft Oriental- not as sweet or heavy incense of flowers, spices, and amber
Floral Oriental- spicy and sweet scent of flowers combined with orange notes
